Every quarter I compile the best photographs taken on our conservation and development programmes. This shot was made during a reef fish survey. A small group of volunteers spotted a Hawksbill turtle and managed to follow it under water for a considerable amount of time. The picture inspired us to start a more comprehensive turtle catalogue for the area.
With many suspected resident turtles it might be possible to start a catalogue based on picture identification. Such a catalogue might enable us eventually to identify important habitat and relations between turtle habitat and other biodiversity. Information like this is a crucial aid in the conservation management decisions our main partner the Kenya Wildlife Service deals with on a daily basis.
