Standard six settle down and sing

During the last quarter, GVI started teaching Creative Arts to Standard 6. I have to confess that even if I was excited to teach something other than English and Maths, I was still a little bit nervous about how the class would be. Indeed, knowing that Standard 6 would not be evaluated on the topic, I was scared that discipline would become an issue. Well, as a matter of fact, I could say that I was right! The first class that we had was on perspective and I thought that it would be a brilliant idea to take the whole class outside and show them what perspective was about. Brilliant idea indeed and I am pretty sure that they enjoyed it. However, the only problem was that there was almost no way to bring them back to the reality of the classroom.  But after a little speech, they understood that if they wanted to have fun learning they had to respect the rules.

As a matter of fact, when we first tried to sing with them, it did look like they had forgotten the basic rules that they had to follow. However, I was sure that the class could be a success if they understood where the limits were. Therefore, after another little speech, they swore that they would behave during the next class Well, they were not lying. Our next singing class was a real success. Everybody had fun but nothing got out of hand! We started the class with 'Waka Waka' by Shakira with the boys answering the girls. Then we sang Jakomo Finane, a little bit hard for them but they really gave it a go. The next song was in Kiswahili, one that I learnt during Music and Movement with the Kindergarden.  All the children started laughing when I started dancing – beautiful moment J. But even better, after singing “ If you want to be somebody” from Sister Act 2 the girls asked if they could sing something they know. We said yes and here is the result:

So... Standard 6, I would say.....let's sing!
