Women's Environmental Education

This expedition we are starting a new education programme focused on engaging the women of Mkwiro village, to introduce topics such as sustainable resource use, mangrove habitats, waste disposal and the relationship between different marine environments. Women, being responsible for keeping the home, often have to collect firewood, water and food to provide for their families, and understanding how to ensure these resources remain sustainable over the next generation is essential for the survival of a traditional way of life here on Wasini Island.

We are planning to invite guest speakers from our local partners to give presentations or lead discussions on conservation issues and initiatives, including KESCOM, Watamu Marine Association and Friends of Shimoni Forest. We hope that the message of the importance of conservation will spread through the community; after all without education there will be no conservation.
